Port Manatee
Port Manatee is located near the entrance to Tampa Bay on Florida's Gulf Coast, making it the closest U.S. deep-water port to the Panama Canal and most Mexican and Central American destinations. The development of Berth 12 gives Port Manatee its first new berthing space in more than 20 years. When completed, the 1,592-foot berth will accommodate ships up to 1,000 feet in length . The Manatee County Port Authority and the port staff have worked hard to maintain a diversified cargo mix. Here, bridge sections built near the port await transport to a construction site in Sarasota while fruit is offloaded nearby for Fresh Del Monte Produce. In addition to the Class III railroad operated by Port Manatee for transport of a variety of breakbulk cargoes, the port can also handle project cargo on its rail system such as this large piece of electrical equipment awaiting transport. Confronted with an opportunity to make Port Manatee a major destination for Brazilian lumber imports, the Port Authority agreed to build this 171,000-square-foot dry-storage facility for Gearbulk subsidiary Port Manatee Forestry Terminal Inc. The Manatee County Port Authority office is itself an example of the flexibility the port prides itself on. The building contains office and cold storage space, as well as a cruise disembarkation terminal.
